Choke Ignition
1995 Ford Contour ignition system shuts off after 5 minutes of use. Will restart after setting 1 hour?
1995 Ford Contour V6-153 2.5L DOHC 125k mi auto.
The ignition system shuts off after 5 minutes of operation (no spark).
It runs fine then quits after the idle goes down, when the choke disengages. No misfire, no running rough, it just quits.
After setting for 1 hour, it can be started and will run for another 5 minutes.
No engine code, no check engine light?
My first suspect would be the ignition wires. I remember I had to replace them every 40-50K or so. So I guess yours is almost due.
EDIT: Another possibility is a dead Water Pump. The Duratec V6 water pump has a plastic impeller which is known to break in half after 40-50K miles. With no water, it'll overheat, and engine shuts itself off to save itself. If this is combined with lack of temp sensor that shows you the Water Temp inside to red level, it can produce the symptom you describe.
EDIT2: Come to think of it, you would not even see the temp go up in the temp gauge on the Instrument Panel, because the water doesn't move at all. Definitely test for coolant flow. If you're not getting any, it's the water pump.
