Jeep Cherokee Transmission problem?

hi i have a 96' Cherokee w/ 192,000 on it Auto Transmission 4X4. And off an on the transmission will slip kinda. When i take off from a dead stop in Over drive or 3 it slips, but if i shift i manually and pull it into 1st/2nd gear it takes right off. I heard it could be some sort of electrical thing that keeps it from downshifting.
Also only a few times i have heard like a grinding coming from my rear end maybe or still realted to the transmission problem idk? It has only done it a handful of times.
ANy ideas on what it might be?
P.S. Its not worth putting a new trany in i didnt pay that much for the jeep and i have more tham abused this truck so its already paid itself off. Tuff little F***er.

I agree with the tranny filterfluid change. But a little addition to this is band adjustment. While your in the pan there is a little square bolt with a lock nut on it. This is your band adjustment. I don't know the exact specs on the 96 but if you buy the Haynes manual (you should for every car you own, if your going to work on them yourself) It will tell you something like "tighten to 64 in lbs, back off 2 12 turns"
There is also another one on the outside of the transmission with the same scenario. These two bolts adjust your front and rear bands in the transmission. A torque wrench in Inch pounds can be bought for under $30 at like a Harbor Freight Store. No need to buy the best as I never use the thing but once a year. The filter is also of paramount importance. If it is clogged the transmission can not build enough pressure to shift, until you get into the higher RPMs.
