What do I use to drill holes in a electric bass?
I recently bought a 90's fender p bass and need to drill the holes in the pick guard and the body for the bridge and pickup cover. I don't really want to start putting holes in my guitar without knowing what to use.
The best choice for drilling clean holes in wood is the "brad point" style drill bits, like those shown at http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Drill_bits/Drill_Bits, _Brad_Point.html. Always center-punch the desired hole location first, and use a variable-speed electric drill, if possible. Lacking the specialized drill bits, start with the smallest size standard drill you have and gradually work up to the diameter needed for the screws; make sure not to drill a hole larger than the inside diameter of the screws. Put a piece of tape on the bit to mark the depth you need to drill, just to avoid going too deep into the wood. Some folks recommend placing a piece of masking tape over the hole location prior to drilling, which can minimize the possibility of chipping; this works particularly well on larger holes.
